Sabrin Miller
As a figurative artist living in Blairgowrie, I have a love of animals and nature, and am constantly inspired by the animals and wildlife seen on daily walks.
Working from my garden studio, under the name Garrsab Studio, I create monochrome oil paintings in black or brown, using a reductive technique where I go through a process of removing paint from the surface of the canvas. The result offers something more dramatic, yet delivers a sensitive portrayal of the animal, which is often depicted during restful or calm moments.
I have always held a creative interest, dipping in and out of activities between life's obstacles, but it was during my thirties an artistic journey began, from attending evening classes and part time HNC/HND courses, to studying Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.
Within this hive of activity I found myself drawn to sculptural work but equally intrigued by the vast range of possibilities such as mixed media, and in the process of trying to find 'my thing', began to see potential in the use of oils and removing surface paint to expose the underlying surface.
Greyhounds emerged as my subject matter, having been charmed by their elegance and gentle nature following an encounter with one abandoned in woods. He was the first of several greyhounds to enter my home and be the continuing influence of artistic output.
At a later stage, horses and donkeys began to feature in my work, evolving from several years spent working with them. The natural progression from there was to include other animals, particularly ones seen on a daily basis such as red squirrels and deer.
I also enjoy mixed media on occasion for something different or quirky, and looking ahead, would like to apply my painting style to larger pieces and other subjects.
